Website Builders vs Hand Coding

Whenever talking about building a website it always seems to circle back to this one question, “Should I hand code or use a Content Management System.”

So, if you’re wondering, “Should I use WordPress or HTML?” Press play.

When it comes to content management systems there are a lot to choose from. Take your pic, WordPress, Squarespace, and even wix.

On the other hand, coding from scratch is a great way to get exactly (ok not exactly) what you want.

Learning those languages are easy but create a unique and astonishing website is very very very hard. You thought you already know how to write code yet the design isn't aesthetically pleasing. CMS is the future.

I know this is an old video… So back in the 90s I started learning HTML (didn't do anything professional with it, just for fun) and CSS (when it 1st came out)… I used dreamweaver to make the webpage but went in and changed things by hand with the html and css (and added things). I thought it was easier and faster at the time then learning to hand code the whole webpage… do professionals do this type of stuff now? Also used microsoft frontpage (remember that software? lol)

I am learning both. It doesn't feel like a one or the other thing to me. My blog is custom coded, but the first one I am doing for a friend will be wordpress. Why reinvent the wheel?

even if you don't want to learn HTML but want a good website, there's no shortage of people who know HTML and CSS and JS, and it only costs like maybe 200-500 dollars to get a 5 page static website.

Sometimes these page builders take longer to learn and figure out than if you just learnt how to code it

A static site is good for static blog posts, but what if you want to provide spam filtering, subscription forms with Recaptcha (well, you can use MailChimp forms here), social media links, analytics, etc. for user comments. It seems like a lot of work to add it all.

When it comes to bootstrap vs wix/wordpress, which one wins out?

they're both made for creating quick, easy web pages, and offer little when it comes to customisation.

Except with a CMS, you don't need coding but Bootstrap does.

    So Wix : 1, Bootstrap : 0?

If you want a great web builder without the hassle, go with Format. I tried a few different web builders-and in my experience Format comes out way ahead. Why? First, Format designs are beautiful- simple, clean, eye catching, professional. It’s easy to navigate their interface and experiment with themes and templates. And the web pages work well- and have very smooth transitions and functioning. I tried a few other web page builders, and in my experience they were more "glitchy". Second, I am very very impressed with how the people at Format really care and are outstanding in terms of customer service. I don’t feel pushed off onto a forum or online database. Third, unlike other web builders- Format is run by and for artists. I feel like they’re not only a web builder.  Without getting too "warm and fuzzy", they’re also building a community or artists. They do this not only by their web design product and outstanding customer service, but by creating an inspirational online magazine for artists. I feel like I'm more part of an artist’s community with Format, rather than just a number.

I am new to web development but have some experience in software development, hence I follow coding from scratch. But my worry is, how to manage web security(prevent hacking) and SEO when we do development from scratch ?

Website Builder > front page type of sites that doesn't require much power and its sole purpose is to inform or let your audience view you or your brand.
Hand Code > eCommerce, social sites, blogs or sites that have specific functions and purposes that requires much power.
