Google Sites Pros and Cons of this Excellent FREE Website Builder

Google Sites has many pros and many cons depending on what you need, want and expect from this free website builder. Overall, Google Sites is perfect for an “about me” style website. 🔔 Subscribe –

Google Sites allows anyone to quickly and easily create small, lovely looking website with ease. You can even setup a custom domain name and you get 100% free hosting. If you’ve been looking to create a professional looking about me style website or perhaps you need to create a simple 5 to 10 page website for casual use then I highly suggest you use Google Sites.

Is it the perfect website builder? No. After having used Google Sites for the last 30 days, here are some pros and cons:

Clickbank Promo Tools

PROS:

-The templates you use look great. Everything is responsive and looks fantastic on mobile devices and it’s very easy to edit and design your website with their built in drag and drop editor.

-Excellent option for any casual website, about me website that will be 5-10 pages long.

-Can setup a custom domain name that is https secure. Amazing!

CONS:

– No naked url’s allowed. Your website must have the “www” in the URL.

– Visitors who try to visit your websites naked domain name will be presented with a “not found” error instead of being redirected.

– Even if you use a custom domain name, your Google Sites URL is still publicly available allowing for duplicate content where people can view your website via the custom domain name or the Google Sites sub domain URL.

– No control over page titles or the meta description. Your website will be poorly optimized for SEO.

– You must have a “home” link in your menu bar and you will have the homepage and menu link for home be duplicate pages. It’s weird I know.

– Unlike Blogger, you can not monetize with Adsense

5:59 Well yes, but actually no. Straight out from google, yes, you can't have a naked domain. But you can create a 301 redirect using a third party so that when someone types in "domain.com" it will automatically be redirected to the "www" version of it, which is "http://www.domain.com".

    How to do this?

    1. Go to https://301redirect.website/instructions (read that carefully)
    2. In the first box type in your naked domain
    3. Check the second box that says "I will let live traffic over time create my results table and build my redirection rules"
    4. In the last box, type in the domain you know works (in this case might be the "www" version of it, "http://www.domain.com")

PS: There might be some extra things that you need to do in order to get to this steps, if you just bought your domain and have nothing set up with it.

    Hope it was useful.

Would you suggest Google Sites for Blogging, just as a content writing hobby? I don't intend to monetize it. Just a diary for showcasing my poetry, travelling videos? Is it completely free for unlimited pages and unlimited content? Btw @David Utke great video man! Kudos.

thanks for the video, I instantly subbed! Is it possible to create a webpage as minimal as this http://www.lrmrventures.com/ using google my business website builder or am I forced to use every section of the templates provided like "about me"? I will have zero traffic and only would like my company name on the website and nothing else just like the lrmrventures.com page. If this is not possible with google website builder are there any other services that are free/cheap that you recommend? Thank you!

Hi David, thanks for this valuable video. I’ve tried Google sites too and I’d like to know if there’s a way to add a section in the posts for “Comments”. Also embedded links open in the same tab when clicked, and there’s no option to make it open on a separate tab. We’re you able to add “Share Buttons”?

What do you exactly mean by 5 to 10 page website? As in, does that mean in TOTAL 5 to 10 pages (so maybe if we're considering blogging, we can only have 5 to 10 individual blogs) or something else?

You can get the naked url to work just fine. You can customize the url freely for each page. You may want to research your cons a bit better. One real issue is the lack of control of the height of images. Also adding an audio player that works across platforms is a challenge. Cheers.

Google Sites / Google Suite is the worst headache I ever had. I contacted support and each person would disconnect after they did not know what to do. Creating a simple site in Google Sites is one thing – having it work? Ha ha. I am now told I must have a separate web hosting company. I got domains from Google domains, bought G Suite, etc. and it is all totally worthless. The previous 4 people in support did not have any knowledge at all of the things in G Suite. All I wanted was for my 2nd and 3rd domain purchases from Google, with pages created in G Suite – TO WORK ! Thats it! I have spent about 4 hours in chat the only thing I learned is that I need to get rid of G Suite and use WordPress/ SiteGround. ! This is beyond insane. The most simple questions – I could not get answers to them. Then after hours, they ALWASYS disconnect when they realize they don't know what to do! I should have never used G Suite. Your management needs to review this please (all my chats). I need a response from management please. You should use this in training. I think I should get a full refund for everything I have spent on G Suite in the last few months and find somebody else like Word Press that actually knows what they are doing. Even that will not even begin to compensate me for everything I have been through. You would not even believe what I have been through in chat with people that don't know anything, taking me around in circles. I plan to do detailed reviews of services like G Suite and promote them on YouTube. G Suite is a miserable failure and none of your support people know how to use it. Plus, nobody told me they couldn't handle the most simple task of having the page actually work (hosted). I still don't know how one worked because I never got a host. But when I tried to get others working it was a disaster. One guy told me I needed to contact Google Business after a half hour of now answers. It has nothing to do with them. Another one told me I needed to contact Google Domains but didn't know how to do it. This is beyond being a disaster. I need these domains/web sites to work ! The very least somebody could have done is tell me to go somewhere else to get what I needed.

Before all of this, I spent a lot of time in different support pages. Is it that difficult to buy a domain and create pages that work for their domains?

The first domain I purchased and actually got working was test4echo.org

Since then I have wanted to get many other domains/websites for separate ventures. I thought I could just create all the pages and manage them in G Suite. BIG mistake.

I have purchased 2 more domains so far and created a page for one of them:

boyzboyzboyz.org (cannot get the page to work at the URL)

coronavirusweapons.org (I haven't even begun trying to get this one to work!)

After 4 hours wasted and a day totally destroyed, I am now told I need a separate web hosting company. Why didn't I need that for my first site, Test4echo.org? Why wasn't this made known in the first place as I have used this for months? I thought that was the whole point of this creating sites and buying domains.

I want to be able to use and mange twenty different domains / websites ! I can't even get 2 to work after many hours. I want to totally get rid of G Suite and get a refund for all the money I have paid.

After 6 hours in chat with many people, I was finally sent to Google Domains help (I was originally just going to get info to end everything related to Google). I got a guy that actually knew what he was doing and got the sites to work. Having my sites work should not seem like a miracle – lol.
