Crypto Mining with RTX 3080's, My Experience and recommendations

As I mentioned in my previous video the Gigabyte Eagle or Gigabyte Gaming OC cards are good for gaming, but due to how memory intensive some Algos are, some models are limited. Please comment below with the following information, so that the community can use this video to help them focus on getting a card that meetings their expectations.

1. What make and model GPU you have or have tested?
2. Does it have thermal pads on the backside of the PCB connecting the backplate.
3. Does your card thermal throttle? Check the following “Performance limit – thermal” in “HWinfo”, Power draw (if it gets locked around 200watts), and fan speed maxes out.
4. What is your 24/7 stable hashrate and clock/settings?

My sweet spot setup is as follows:
-400 on Core, +200 on mem, and PL set to 65%

    -Gigabyte Eagle OC RTX 3080 – 97.4mhs @ 221w
    -Gigabyte Gaming OC RTX 3080 – 97.3mhs @ 222w
Yup, Both mine giga 3080 have no thermal pad on memory on the backplate, are hashing around 98mhs @ 222w (no hashrate drop) in a server case with both front and rear delta fans installed in my COLD garage. GPU temp at 31 degree Celsius, ambient temp at 2 degree C. Praying for no summer come next year!

    -Evga XC3 Ultra RTX 3080 – 99.65mhs @ 230w
Mining in an open-air mining rig inside my house. It also has no thermal pad on memory on the backplate, GPU temp at 46 degree Celsius, ambient temp at 16 degree C. Look forward to seeing what this evga card will do in the summer.

I got my cards and miners at IMINERS,CO and they are great group of people. Cards and miners are awesome, support is insane, shipping is fast and they provide wholesale discount. My recommendation for them.

Gigabyte Eagle RTX 3080 worked fine for about a week at ~91-93 mhs and 201-206w. After that, thermal throttling lowered to ~70-80 mhs and 196w. As of last night, card completely out. Attempting to RMA back to Gigabyte for repair/replacement.

Do you have a link to the thermal pads you are referring to here? I have that same issue with the Gigabyte 3080 OC

2x 3080 Zotac HOLO 100mh/s at 50° and 86° memory-junction, 220w easy, one of them had really bad thermal pads, one was stuck below the gpu cooler (and yes at the backside as well) i had to change immediately because of extensive thermal throttling

I'm running a 3080 founders, was having issues running with 1200 mem oc. Now running stable at +1000, -300, 72%pl for 92MH @ 230W. But what does any of this matter if were not tracking the efficiency? it was at 330 with excavator now im up to 400kH/J I mean who cares if you can get 100MH if your paying more in electrical bills. What is the best kH/J for a 3080. I want the best payout not the most hashes right? I don't mind combing through the comments here and calculating actual MH-pwrconsume= profitability. Also running into an issue recently where my 3080 system will reset randomly at the exact time the "in-process" dumps on nicehash happen? Mining 2 evga 3070s, they get 58 and 61MH at 268W total system power… and much more stable. However I have had EVGA precision X1 crash and reset default randomly. Seems everyone in the mining community uses MSI afterburner? Why? Proven stability or just a lemming thing?

I have a 3080 Eagle at 93mh/s with no extra thermal pads installed. I was thermal throttling at +900mhz memory but at 500mhz it is very stable and doesn’t move from 93mh/s. Ordered some 3rd party thermal pads for the backplate and waiting for them to be delivered.

I managed to sort out my thermal issues with thermal pads under the back plate but what i find is that after about an hour of running the card still tries to auto overclock the core which makes the memory run slower. just wondering if you have any work arounds for this?
    My overclocks are set to:
    core -825
    mem clock +1000
    power 63%
    96mh/s

Realize this is older post, however this happened and probably a good fix. Running multiple Gigabyte 3080 OC Gaming RTX 3080. The thermal pads they have installed are garbage.
All of them thermal throttled at 110c vram with minimal vram oc at +200, in fact sometimes -100 to -200 vram oc running max 82-84 mhs all run around 62-65 power limit
Added 2mm thermal pads to back plate which had none: results adjusted vram oc to +200 and +400- 10-15% increase run at 89-91mhs but still hitting 108c GPU Junction temp
Next replaced all 1mm and 2mm thermal pads on the heatsink: results adjusted vram oc range from +750 to +1300 and maintains 86c-88c memory junction temp and can run at 97-99 mhs. worth the low cost upgrade. As a side note, I had all fans running at 90% prior to thermal pad install and now can run them at 70% maintaining 86C GPU memory Junction temp. Took about 30 minutes to remove, clean, cut and apply new thermal pads and put back together. Easy project.
Crazy how the manufacturers cannot spend a few more cents to address this. HIghly recommend you conduct the thermal pad installs and replacements for sake of card longevity and increased profit. cost of thermal pads ($10-$15) will easily pay off.

Hi. Great vid thanks. I have an Asus 3090. BUT I am thinking of building a custom box as I want a box for ETH MINING only AND want to add 2 X RTX 3090 in one box. Is that going to work? Or will it simply over heat and be better in the long run getting 2 boxes. Any comments & thoughts ?

Gigabyte Gaming OC 3080 with thermal pads added to the backplate.
Getting 100-101MH/s with 66% power limit, -500 core, +1350 mem, fans at 75% with core temp 53c, memory temp 84c in a room at 20c
It would thermal throttle all the time and do 80-85MH/s before adding the thermal pads.

Hi. Just saw your vid , many thanks.
    My mining setup is:
    Asus 3080 RTX TUF OC
    +1250 Memory clock
    Core clock -150
    Power limit 68%
    MH/s =100 drawing 230watts
Fan temp 49 degrees and fan speed 75%.
Case side door off for maximum air flow. Runs 24/7 and never had thermal throttling.
I did test to max memory clock to +1500mhz but maxed at 102MH/s and increased fan speed (noise) and still didn’t thermal throttle.

I replaced all the memory thermal pads (Gelid 2mm front & 3mm back) on my 3080 Gaming OC and now I am running stable at 98+MH/s (Core 0; Memory 1200; Pwr 61%; Fans 85). Also the Memory junction temp dropped by 24C from 110C to 86C.

Fairly new to this, so appreciate any pros/cons, what OC setting you suggest, OS , etc.

    Really appreciated 🙂
