I’ve spent the last month testing free website builders and here’s the truth: I don’t think website builders are looking to give away something for free but— with a little research you can definitely make it work.

This video walks you through the 8 most popular website builders:

WordPress.com randomly adds advertisements to your website— there’s no way to control where the ads show. Not great!

Wix has a great paid plan but the free plan is pretty limited. The free subdomain is long and unwieldy, the ad is pretty intrusive and they have an aggressive bandwidth limit.

Google Sites is intriguing— you can add a custom domain, which is great! The only other free website builder to allow this is Ucraft. Unfortunately Google Sites isn’t really for small businesses. They only provide one template.

Jimdo includes a small ad that’s easy to miss. They offer a pretty nice subdomain— but I wish they removed the “free” in it.

XPRS has no ads on their website— which is awesome! Unfortunately the free URL is quite long.

Strikingly is a great website builder. It’s designed for building one page websites. It’s free plan has a great subdomain and includes ecommerce (limited to 1 product). It also includes 5 GB of bandwidth.

Ucraft let’s you connect a custom domain— which is great! It has a small ad that scrolls alongside your website and limits you to 1 page.

Weebly is my pick for the best website builder. It’s a great website builder with a strong free plan: a good subdomain, ecommerce and they are the only free website builder to offer unlimited bandwidth. You’ll want to make sure you can live with Weebly’s ad on free pages.

I also cover a few tips on how to sidestep common limitations on free plans: how to add a redirected domain name, how to add Google Analytics and how to add ecommerce— even if the free website builder doesn’t support these plans.

    I gave up on wordpress… the process for setting up new site is tedious. I also find Wix to be over priced. Weebly is limited for musicians. Bandzoogle was pricey at 17 a month. Also Site Grounds – not free. There are hidden fees they don't tell you about up front like $2.95 for domain then an additional $15 per month.

    You guys can remove Weebly footer by adding the code below. First, click on the SEO menu. Then go to the "Footer code" section. Then paste this and click save, and then finally publish it.

    <script>

    document.addEventListener('DOMContentLoaded', function() {

    var element = document.getElementById("weebly-footer-signup-container-v3");

    element.parentNode.removeChild(element);

    }, false);

    </script>

    The same can work with the Favicon. Do the same thing. However, use this code below instead, and paste it to de "Header code" code section.

    <link rel="icon" type="image/png" href="/files/theme/favicon.png">

    Unfortunatelly, I don't know how to add you custom favicon by code. But at least you can remove the Weebly one.

    Hope this helps someone. =)

    Note: English is not my first language. And I din't make the code.

    Why is XPRS /IM Creator (or whatever their name exactly is – this doesn’t help them lol) so under the radar?

    Most of the YT reviews are years old and even their own YT channels only have a couple of videos.

    It looks pretty great as a No Ad, Free Website, but the lack of YT content worries me a little.

    How about this for my plan:
    (I’m building a personal links site/blog to share my selections of the web to family members as well as being my own quick link to my fav sites etc. Design, Fashion, Music, Resources etc etc, so I don’t have to send a text or email or socials when I see something cool I know they’d like).
    – Start with a Free Website with no Ads = XPRS. I don’t want any ads clogging up any space especially as they’ll probably access mostly from mobile. Ads on a mobile site are my pet peeve.
    – While alongside building for free a more extensive and personalised version of the website on Webflow (the future of WYSIWYG from what I can see. If The Futur are using it, then it’s the future. Lol) with the Free Individual Account Plan and then once XPRS proves too limited and I’m ready to commit monthly funds I’ll upgrade to the Basic Website Plan that takes my site live.
    🤘👨‍💻
